NATO remains the guarantor of our collective defence, and Romania’s commitment to fulfill its obligations within the Alliance is unwavering, Romania’s interim President Ilie Bolojan said in a message on the occasion of NATO Day in Romania and the 21st anniversary of Romania’s accession to the Transatlantic Alliance.
„We are celebrating 21 years since Romania became part of the most powerful political-military alliance in history. Accession to NATO and integration into the European Union represented Romania’s main strategic goals after the December 1989 Revolution, and their achievement has positively marked the evolution of our society toward an authentic democracy. In the current international context, more than ever, NATO membership constitutes both a security guarantee and a solid foundation on which our country will continue its development and position itself as a pillar of regional stability and a responsible Ally,” the message reads.
The interim president highlighted that through the NATO structures hosted by Romania and the participation of the Romanian military personnel in the NATO Battle Group in Poland and in the enhanced air policing missions in the Baltic countries, Romania plays an important role in strengthening the allied deterrence and defence posture on the Eastern Flank.
„NATO remains the guarantor of our collective defence, and Romania’s commitment to fulfilling its obligations within the Alliance is unwavering. At the same time, we will contribute to strengthening European security, alongside other EU member states. We will continue to support Ukraine in the pursuit of a just and lasting peace. Romania has honoured its NATO commitment and increased the defence budget to over 2% of GDP. We aim for a gradual increase in the coming years, under conditions of budgetary balance and with the support of European instruments. We will continue to use this financial base to prioritize the modernisation and equipping of the Romanian Army, increase interoperability with allies, train military personnel and revive the national defence industry,” Bolojan added.
The interim head of state pointed out that the development of transport infrastructure is necessary to ensure mobility.
„On the occasion of the 21st anniversary of Romania’s accession to NATO, I extend congratulations and thanks to all those who contributed to achieving this national goal. To those who continue to work in support of strengthening Romania’s profile in NATO, I urge them to maintain their unwavering commitment and professionalism. Together we are stronger! Together we are NATO! Happy Anniversary, Romania! Happy Anniversary, NATO!,” Bolojan said.
