The National Institute of Public Health (INSP) announced 35 cases of West Nile virus infection were recorded in Romania, between 2 June and 25 September. Of these, 34 are confirmed and one is considered a probable case.
The cases were registered in Bucharest (12), and in the counties of Alba (1), Braila (4), Dolj (1), Galati (6), Ilfov (1), Iasi (2), Prahova (1), Salaj (1), Timis (2), Teleorman (1), Tulcea (1), Valcea (1), and Vrancea (1).
The affected individuals include: 17 people aged 70-79, 6 people aged 60-69, 6 people aged 50-59, 3 people aged over 80, and one person each in the 10-19, 30-39, and 40-49 age groups.
In this context, INSP specialists issued several recommendations for the public:
*avoid exposure to mosquitoes by wearing long-sleeved clothing and long trousers;
* use mosquito repellent substances;
* prevent mosquitoes from entering the home (by using protective window screens);
* drain standing water near the household;
* remove containers with stagnant water and household waste from around the property. AGERPRES
