The number of companies and sole traders (authorised natural persons – PFA) that entered insolvency in the first nine months of 2025 was 4,698, down 8.22% compared with the same period in 2024, when 5,119 insolvencies were recorded, according to data published on the website of the National Trade Register Office (ONRC).
The highest number of insolvent companies and sole traders was registered in Bucharest, namely 833 cases, representing a decrease of 8.66% compared with the first nine months of 2024.
Next in the insolvency rankings were the counties of Bihor, with 412 insolvencies (down 4.63%), Cluj – 310 (down 12.18%), Timis – 275 (down 3.51%), Ilfov – 248 (up 20.39%), Iasi – 159 (down 28.38%) and Prahova – 153 (down 14.04%).
At the opposite end of the scale, the fewest insolvency cases were recorded in Covasna County – 19 (down 13.64% compared with January-September 2024), Harghita – 21 (up 5%), Botosani – 22 (down 50%) and Vaslui – 26 (down 18.75%).
By field of activity, the largest number of insolvencies occurred in wholesale and retail trade, motor vehicle and motorcycle repair – 1,024 cases (down 23.24% compared with the first nine months of 2024), construction – 891 (down 15.86%), transport and storage – 528 (up 1.73%), and manufacturing – 499 (down 18.6%).
In September 2025, a total of 137 insolvencies were registered, most of them in Timis (36), Arad (13), Iasi (12) and Constanta (10). AGERPRES
