529 companies and sole traders enter insolvency in January 2026

The number of companies and registered sole traders that entered insolvency in January 2026 stood at 529, up 36.69% compared with the same period in 2025, when 387 insolvencies were recorded, according to data published on the website of the National Trade Register Office (ONRC).

The highest number of companies and registered sole traders entering insolvency was recorded in Bucharest, namely 108, an increase of 0.93% compared with the first month of 2025.

Next in the insolvency ranking were the counties of Cluj, with 38 insolvencies, up 22.58%, Bihor, with 28, up 40%, Timis, with 23, up 9.52%, Ilfov, with 21, the same as in January 2025, and Galati, with 21, up 162.5%.

The fewest insolvencies in January 2026 were recorded in the counties of Caras-Severin, with 2, compared with 3 in January 2025, Mehedinti, with 3, compared with 1 in January 2025, Mures, with 3, compared with 8 in January 2025, and Salaj, with 3, compared with 4 in January 2025.

By activity area, the highest number of insolvencies was recorded in wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, namely 85, down 19.05% compared with the first month of 2025, construction, with 79, up 5.33%, and transport and storage, with 48, down 2.04%.
