The population connected to the public water supply system last year was 14.7 million people, accounting for 77.1% of Romania’s resident population, according to data published on Monday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
„In 2023, the population connected to the public water supply system stood at 14,705,481 people, accounting for 77.1% of Romania’s resident population, 428,219 people more than in 2022. The increase was determined by the connection of the population to the newly built water supply networks,” reads the release from Statistics Romania.
By development regions, the highest share of the population connected to the public water supply system in the total resident population was recorded in the Bucharest-Ilfov region (96.7%), followed by the South-East region (90.7%). The lowest degree of connection was recorded in the North-East region (52.5%), followed by the South-Muntenia region (70.7%).
In 2023, the volume of water distributed amounted to 2.14 billion m3, about 200.8 million m3 more than in 2022. The most significant growth was in agriculture, with the volume of water distributed 202.5 million m3 more.
The highest amounts of water distributed were recorded in the Buzau-Ialomita (35.9%) and Arges-Vedea (15.6%) river basins, respectively.
