President Klaus Iohannis will lead, between September 18-22, the Romanian delegation to the high-level segment of the 78th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), which will take place in New York, United States of America, the Presidential Administration reports. The main topic of the current session of the General Assembly is „Rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity: Accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals towards peace, prosperity, progress and sustainability for all’, write Agerpres.
On this occasion, President Iohannis will present our country’s views with regard to topical issues at the global level, and he will emphasize the foreign policy priorities and Romania’s contribution to the objectives on the multilateral agenda of the UN.
The programme of the visit will also include, among others, the participation of the Romanian delegation in the Summit on the Sustainable Development Goals, on which occasion the President will hold the speech on behalf of Romania in the Leaders’ Dialogue with the theme „Unity and solidarity: strengthening the multilateral system for consolidated support, cooperation, follow-up and revision.”
Also, the President will be a guest of honour at the debate organized by the prestigious Columbia University in New York, as part of the World Leaders Forum event, with the theme „Romania’s perspective on the war against Ukraine and its impact on Black Sea security.” On the sidelines of the high-level segment of the UN General Assembly, President Iohannis will also have a series of bilateral meetings and he will participate in the established formal events, included in the programme of each high-level segment of the UN General Assembly. During his participation in multilateral meetings and during his interactions with his counterparts from UN member states, the head of state will reiterate „our country’s firm support for effective multilateralism, respect for international law and international order based on rules, in which the UN plays a central role.” President Klaus Iohannis will also present Romania’s analysis regarding „the accumulation of multifaceted crises that the international community faces at the global level, with negative effects on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, as well as the ways of managing them effectively – through coordinated action and solidarity, especially on levels such as food security, combating disinformation and climate change management.”
Romania’s head of state will also mention the importance of the Future Summit, due on September 2024, whose fundamental stake is the strengthening of multilateralism, so that the UN can adequately manage the current challenges.
Iohannis will also present Romania’s substantial contribution to the promotion of the values of democracy, human rights and the rule of law and the active role played by our country in UN activities, on the three main levels: peace and security, sustainable development and human rights, states the Presidential Administration.
