National first at Central Military Hospital – first targeted prostate biopsies with MRI-guided robotic arm

Published on

Central Military Emergency University Hospital „Dr. Carol Davila” announced on Friday having performed, as a national first, the first targeted prostate biopsies with the help of the MRI-guided robotic arm, according to Agerpres.

According to a press release of the health unit sent to AGERPRES, the medical team that carried out these investigations, between September 5 and 7, was led by Cezar Betianu, primary doctor in radiology and medical imaging, with skills in general ultrasound, CT, MR and senology.

In-bore MRI localized prostate biopsy is a method that detects suspected cancer hotbeds and ensures the sampling of all these with a millimeter sensitivity guided by a device and software based on an advanced technology. Through this method, cancer hotbeds can be detected with greater accuracy and it is not necessary to repeat the biopsy, the release states.

„This diagnostic method reduces the number of biopsies needed to identify prostate cancer, which reduces the patient’s discomfort and increases the success rate of the treatment, through its early initiation,” the cited source highlights.

In-bore MRI localized prostate biopsy is the only technique that uses a magnetic resonance (MR) machine during the procedure, so it is the only truly MR-guided technique. With its help, high quality images are produced in which the target lesions can be identified. The biopsy needle is guided to the MR regions marked as suspicious by a robotic arm using the navigation function of the software and a localized biopsy is performed.
