Senate president pays tribute to Romanian soldiers who fought in World War I, on Victory Day

The president of the Senate, Nicolae Ciuca, conveyed on Wednesday to war veterans, on Victory Day, his appreciation and respect for all they have done for the country.

„As a general, I am well aware of the efforts and losses of our army in the worst armed conflict this continent has ever seen. I pay my tribute to the Romanian soldiers who fought in World War II and I convey to the veterans we still have among us my appreciation and respect for all they did for the country,” Ciuca wrote on Facebook.

He noted that Victory Day in Europe, in World War II, commemorates the entry into force of the armistice at 23:.01 on 8 May 1945.

„In the Soviet sphere of influence, in which our country was, the holiday was marked on May 9. Because Moscow’s clock is two hours behind that of Central Europe, the end of hostilities was counted at Kremlin at 01:01 on the second day. Romania’s return to the free world requires that we celebrate this important day with our Euro-Atlantic partners on May 8,” explained Nicolae Ciuca.
