PM Ciolacu: Cutting down taxes for low-income employees to be discussed with social partners next week

Published on

Prime minister Marcel Ciolacu said in Constanta on Wednesday that next week he will have a meeting with the social partners, trade unions and employers, to discuss the possibilities of cutting down taxes for employees with the lowest incomes and those paid the minimum salary.

„After the government meeting, I will also meet with all ministers and authorities that have projects under implementation through the National Resilience and Recovery Programme, and also milestones to meet, and next week we will have a meeting with the social partners, both employers and trade unions, where we have several things to establish, including discussing the possibilities of a tax cut for those with the lowest incomes, namely those paid the minimum salary. The good news, as I saw today, is that we have reached an average salary of over 1,000 euros,” said Marcel Ciolacu.

The head of government was asked whether deductions for low-income earners will be introduced when the minimum salary is increased.

„I believe that such a decision can be made by the Romanian Government and any government after we have the second quarter execution, as is normal. But, until then, we start discussions with the social partners and depending on the figures we will have at the end of the second quarter, we will see what measures we can take in this situation. However, we have the highest tax on labour for low incomes and a third of Romanians are still paid the minimum salary. That is why there is this pressure, we are the only European state that is facing this situation,” Prime Minister Ciolacu said.

He added that there are proposals from employers who want to differentiate the minimum salary increase by activity branch.

Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu participated in Constanta, on Wednesday, in the event „DP WORLD-20 years of efficiency and innovation in Romania” and in the putting into operation the new port infrastructure investment within the National Company for the Administration of the Maritime Port of Constanta.
