Taxation of pensions, based on INS data, according to purchasing power, says PM Ciolacu

Prime minister Marcel Ciolacu declared, on Wednesday, related to the increase in the tax ceiling of pensions, that he wants to create a mechanism similar to the one applied in the case of minimum wage, from the National Institute of Statistics (INS)’s data, based on the purchasing power.

„No, I don’t want to change anything. I want the Romanian state to be sustainable and predictable. If you want to continue the discussion around the table and when it’s an election year or when someone wants to come up with something favorable to the people, they come and say: from 2,000 to 3,000 (RON, ed. n.). I want to create a mechanism similar to the European minimum wage, because a society develops and is sustainable over a long period of time, when politics does not intervene based on something subjective,” said Ciolacu, in connection with the modification of the pension taxation ceiling from 2,000 RON to 3,000 RON.

He added that when a ceiling of 2,000 RON was established, there was a certain purchasing power, a certain inflation, certain price increases, there was no energy crisis.

On Monday, Marcel Ciolacu declared that, from September 1, with the recalculation of pensions, the ceiling above which pensions are taxed will also change, a threshold that is now 2,000 RON.

Currently, pensions under 2,000 RON are not taxed. The tax is 10% of the difference that exceeds 2,000 RON. For example, a pension of 2,800 RON is taxed with 80 RON.
