President Iohannis says security policy remains stable, regardless of changes in states governments

Published on

President Klaus Iohannis said on Tuesday that there have always been changes in the governments of NATO states, but security policy has been and will remain stable, in the context of the political situation in France and the score obtained by conservative and extremist parties in the European Parliament elections.

The head of state pointed out that NATO’s eastern flank has always been considered „a point that must be defended at all costs,” regardless of who was in power in the allied states.

„We have never seen an approach that puts the security of the eastern flank at risk. Regardless of who has been in power in the Allied states, the eastern flank has always been seen as a point to be defended at all costs. Measures have always been discussed in a very realistic and constructive way and very serious steps have been taken and we need to look back. Changes in national governments in the allied states have always been left-wing and right-wing, but security policy has been stable in NATO and will remain so,” Iohannis said, asked whether the political situation in France and the score obtained by conservative and extremist parties in the European Parliament elections could have a negative impact on the security of NATO’s eastern flank.

President Klaus Iohannis co-chaired the Bucharest 9 (B9) Summit in Riga on Tuesday, together with his Polish and Latvian counterparts Andrzej Duda and Edgars Rinkevics.
