President Iohannis’ decision to withdraw candidacy, example of commitment to ensure NATO unity

The US Embassy conveys that the decision of President Klaus Iohannis to withdraw his candidacy for the position of Secretary General of NATO is an example of his commitment to ensure unity and consensus within the North Atlantic Alliance.

We are grateful for Romania’s contributions to the Alliance and for the efforts of President Iohannis to bring into debate the critical issues on the Eastern Flank of the Alliance, including the Black Sea region, a response from the US Embassy sent to AGERPRES on Friday reads.

President Klaus Iohannis informed, on Thursday, the Supreme Council of National Defense (CSAT) that he informed the NATO allies, last week, about the withdrawal of his candidacy for the NATO’s head position.

„President Klaus Iohannis requested the members of the Council to pronounce on Mark Rutte’s candidacy for the post of NATO Secretary General, declaring themselves in favor of Romania’s support for the candidacy of the Dutch Prime Minister,” a press release of the Presidential Administration said.
