Cargo loaded and unloaded in the ports where seagoing vessels operate totaled 16.232 million tonnes in Q1 2024, and sea shipping amounted to 201,000 TEU, according to data centralized by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
In the same period, 8.030 million tonnes of cargo and 6,454 TEUs were transported on inland waterways.
Maritime port transportation increased by 16.1% in Q1 2024, year-over-year. The volume of cargo loaded increased by 24.3% and the volume of cargo unloaded by 6.7%.
Inland waterways transportation recorded an increase of 16.3% in the total volume of goods transported compared to Q1 2023.
According to INS, as far as sea port transportation is concerned, the ports where the most intense activity was carried out in the first quarter of 2024 were Constanta, with a share of 97% and Galati, with a share of 2.1%.
In the mentioned period, the type of cargo transported was mainly solid bulk, with a share of 57% in the total of goods loaded and unloaded. The same type of cargo dominated loading (76.6%), while the largest share being recorded in the case of cargo unloading was that of liquid bulk (49.2%).
The highest quantities of goods loaded and unloaded were recorded in relation to Turkey (16.9%) and the Republic of Korea (5.9%). Among the EU Member States, Spain (5.0%) and Greece (2.9%) recorded the highest volumes of transported goods.
In the first three months of this year, 66.3% of loaded goods, according to the NST 2007 classification, were agricultural, hunting and forestry products; fish and other fishery products, while coal and lignite, coal, oil and natural gas accounted for 30.8% of unloaded goods.
In the port of Constanta, the most significant quantities of goods loaded in Q1 2024, namely 67.3%, were agricultural, hunting and forestry products; fish and other fishery products. Coal and lignite, coal, gas and natural gas accounted for the largest share of the goods unloaded, namely 31.6%.
As for inland waterways transportation, the ports in which the highest quantities of goods were recorded were Constanta, with a share of 67% and Galati, with a share of 9.9%, in Q1 2024.
18.9% of the recorded cargo on international inland waterways were destined to or originated from EU Member States. Overall, Ukraine accounted for the largest share of both origin and destination of goods transported in Q1 2024, i.e. 43.4%.
Agricultural, hunting and forestry products; fish and other fishery products accounted for 53.1% of the total volume of domestic inland waterway transportation.
