47% more flight delays and cancellations in June compared to May

More and more flights have been canceled lately or suffered considerable delays, as in June alone there were 47% more flight delays and cancellations compared to May, according to the data of an online tourism platform.

Of the total number of flights booked through the Vola.ro platform in June, 11% had officially declared delays, and the number of cancellations doubled compared to the previous month.

„Although there were delays and cancellations on multiple routes, the most affected were flights to and from the main European cities, such as London, Paris or Milan. These are among the busiest European hubs: they are the destinations that have the most flights, from and to all corners of the world, which is why the most problematic situations with flights appear here, especially in the peak season”, the cited source informs.

The analysis of the online tourism platform shows that at the beginning of the summer season the number of canceled and delayed flights increased compared to the spring months, but the data shows that the situation is better now compared to the past years, when the record of cancellations and delays in this period had reached to 30%.

At the same time, Vola.ro specialists advise travelers to take precautionary measures and insurance to benefit from quick solutions in case of unforeseen situations at airports. They draw attention to the fact that June was only the beginning of the summer season, but that July and August will be even more crowded. In general, airlines that operate a large number of flights with diversified routes, as is the case with low-cost ones, face the most situations that make air traffic difficult.

One of the causes of flight delays and cancellations refers to the significant increase in air traffic and the number of passengers as a result of the large number of sports competitions taking place in Europe, affecting the air traffic control system and the organization of the airport. Another cause of problems in this period is the lack of specialized staff: both airports and airlines are facing a shortage of staff, so the current teams are unable to cope with such a high demand during the summer. In addition, there may be technical failures of the aircraft or operational challenges (too few available aircraft, changes to the flight schedule) that trigger chain reactions and have a significant impact on the smooth running of a trip.

„Last but not least, it is important to take into account the weather conditions during this period. In recent weeks, Europe has gone through several extreme phenomena, from strong storms to heatwaves and fires, which have also disrupted air traffic”, say the representatives of the online tourism platform.

For passengers affected by flight delays and cancellations, Vola.ro offers support and assistance in finding and purchasing alternative flights, both online and in offices open at the airports in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Timisoara and Bacau, but at the same time , provides customers with several products designed to give them extra security in terms of their travels.
