This year’s edition of the Sibiu Cycling Tour brings together on Saturday, at the start, 25 teams from 14 countries that will cover a route of 674 kilometres, between July 6-9, with the presence of famous British professional road racing cyclist Chris Froome being a surprise.
„At this year’s edition, 25 teams from 14 countries will start in the Sibiu Cycling Tour, including a World Tour team, 6 pro-continental, 16 continental and 2 national teams. From Romania, two continental teams participate, Vini Monzon – Savini Due – Omz Team and MENtoRISE MLMsuperstars, and the Romanian National Team. The reigning champion, Mark Donovan (Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team), returns to defend his title, but he will have to face the strongest competition in the history of the Tour of Sibiu so far. Last year’s main title contender, Lennert van Eetvelt, is also participating in this edition, but the leading position in the overall standings will also be considered by two of the most promising youngsters in the competition, Matthew Riccitello (Israel – Premier Tech) and Florian Lipowitz (Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe),” according to organisers.
Road cycling enthusiasts will appreciate the presence of experienced cyclists with grand tour victories such as Sergio Higuita (Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe), Cesare Benedetti (BORA – hansgrohe), Niccolo Bonifazio, Mark Padun and Valerio Conti (Team Corratec – Vini Fantini), Andreas Leknessund (Uno-X Mobility), former European champion Giacomo Nizzolo (Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team), Jonathan Caicedo (Petrolike), Roger Kluge (Rad-Net Oßwald) and, the surprise of the edition – the British Chris Froome (Israel – Premier Tech), winner of the three Grand Tours – the Tour of France, the Tour of Italy and the Tour of Spain.
The opening ceremony of the Sibiu Cycling Tour will take place on Friday, at 20:30hrs, in the Great Square in the centre of the city, where the presentation of the teams will also take place.
On Saturday, the first stage will take the caravan from Sibiu to Paltinis (167.5 km). On Sunday, there will be two half stages, 2A, Sibiu – Saliste – Sibiu (103 km), and 2B, an individual time trial in downtown Sibiu (3.3 km). The race will continue on Monday, with the queen stage, Sibiu – Sighisoara – Balea Lac (207.3 km), on Tuesday the last stage is scheduled, in which the peloton will run from Sibiu to Tarnaveni and back to Sibiu (192.9 km).
