Romania can become a real energy security provider in Central & SE Europe, president Iohannis says

Published on

Romania can become a true provider of energy security in Central and South-Eastern Europe, highlighted president Klaus Iohannis, in a message sent on Wednesday to the participants of the 5th Ministerial Meeting of the Partnership for Transatlantic Cooperation in the field of energy and of climate change (P-TECC), which takes place at the Parliament Palace.

The president emphasized that, in recent years, Romania has shown solidarity by providing transit and energy support to Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, since „Ukraine’s reconstruction and Moldova’s accession to the EU require resistant transports and sustainable energy infrastructures”.

According to him, Romania, having one of the lowest emissions of greenhouse gases per capita in the European Union, supports the agreed measures aimed at achieving the international and EU objectives regarding the reduction of carbon emissions, at the same time advocating the natural gas and safe nuclear installations’ importance for an efficient energy transition.

In this context, the president reaffirmed Romania’s ambition to develop its own nuclear energy program, by increasing the capacity of the southeastern Cernavoda plant, but also by exploring innovative solutions, such as the technology of small modular reactors.

He mentioned that, through Romania’s offshore natural gas projects, the Black Sea region becomes a true „round table” of energy diplomacy, a landmark of unity and cooperation, promoting long-term stability and prosperity.

P-TECC has evolved into a partnership that proves the added value of transatlantic links in finding solutions for energy diversification, energy cyber security, decarbonization and economic resilience, Iohannis said.

Iohannis added that the energy transition is currently a key factor for a sustainable economy.
