Senate’s Ciuca: Romania is safe, our army is monitoring all possible threats

Senate President and National Liberal Party (PNL) leader Nicolae Ciuca says Romania is safe and that, when discussing any kind of threat to its security, the most important thing that can be done is to treat the situation calmly.

„When we discuss any kind of threat to our security, the most important thing we can do is to treat the situation calmly. I know that any news about drones falling on Romanian territory can cause anxiety and hasty reactions. But, without a proper assessment of the situation and without knowledge of the geopolitical and military context, any incisive statements from political leaders would do more harm than good. No one is bombing us. The only objects that can land on our soil are only remnants of equipment, which have already been destroyed,” Nicolae Ciuca wrote on Facebook on Thursday.

He added that Romania cannot shoot down missiles or drones from Ukrainian airspace because it is illegal.

„This is illegal. If we look in our airspace, we see that we have nothing to shoot at. To change this state of affairs, Romania should negotiate with the NATO leadership and Ukraine conditions for the use of our air defence systems in Ukrainian airspace. Putting such a plan into practice would involve a lot of steps,” Ciuca added.

The Senate president underscores that Romania is safe.

„We are in constant communication and coordination with our allies, especially with the countries on NATO’s Eastern Flank. Our army monitors all possible threats. While others are using their energy and time to invent and throw false accusations on social networks, our military are working professionally and without making a fuss on the internet. Let us be grateful to them,” concludes Nicolae Ciuca.
