JusMin: We managed to bring in over 800 fugitives in 2023

Justice Minister Alina Gorghiu said on Thursday that in 2023 more than 800 fugitives were brought back to the country through judicial cooperation, and this year more than 430, according to a Justice Ministry (MJ) release sent to AGERPRES.

According to the same source, Alina Gorghiu participated in the Annual Meeting of Romanian Diplomacy on Thursday.

„I must emphasise, the cooperation between the Ministry of Justice and the MAE is excellent! In 2023, Romania concluded the CVM after 16 years. You put your shoulder to this success and I thank you for your support! This year we have the best Rule of Law Report so far on the justice chapter. It is the tool for assessing the components of a democratic society, and the positive tone of the Report on justice and the fight against corruption encourages us that we are on the right track and this is a very good message for Romanian diplomacy. I thank the Permanent Representation of Romania to the European Union for its support,” said Alina Gorghiu, as quoted in the press release.

She added that another example of good cooperation is the one between the Ministry of Justice and the Permanent Mission of Romania to the international organisations in Vienna.

„It contributes significantly to the relationship with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and thanks for the support for the participation in the Assembly of the Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption, which took place in December 2023 in the United States,” said the minister of Justice.

Alina Gorghiu asked for further support for the efforts to bring those fleeing Romanian justice to the country, the „zero priority” of her mandate as minister.

„The achievement of this objective is essential for Romania’s image and we have managed, through judicial cooperation, to bring more than 800 fugitives to 2023, and so far this year, more than 430,” Gorghiu said.
