Over 1,200 people arrested since the beginning of the demonstrations in Iran

Iranian authorities have arrested more than 1,200 people, mostly in northern Iran, since the beginning of the protest movement against the death of a young woman detained by the morality police 10 days ago, according to Agerpres.

The demonstrations erupted more than a week ago at the funeral of a 22-year-old Kurdish woman named Mahsa Amini, who died in detention after being arrested by police enforcing the Islamic Republic’s strict restrictions on women’s dress.

The protest movement spread to several cities in the country, where demonstrations shouted slogans hostile to the government, according to local media.

Iran summoned the British and Norwegian ambassadors over what it called interference and hostile media coverage. Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian criticised U.S. support for „rioters”, according to Reuters.
