The opposition Save Romania Union (USR) demands that the Court of Accounts proceeds to probing the financial activity of the Permanent Electoral Authority (AEP) headed by Toni Grebla, looking at the legality of the payments and incomes granted to the authority’s president.
According to an USR release, the floor leader of the USR deputies Ionut Mosteanu submitted to the Standing Bureau of the Chamber of Deputies a draft decision requesting a detailed audit by the Court of Accounts into the financial activity of the Permanent Electoral Authority, specifically into all the payments and incomes granted to the AEP president, evaluating their compliance with the legislation in force and examining the criteria for establishing Grebla’s salary and benefits. The control seeks to identify potential conflicts of interest and ensure that AEP’s financial decisions comply with the standards of transparency, ethics and integrity,” the cited source said.
„Through this control, we want to clarify how the public funds were granted and used and to identify possible deviations from the legal regulations. The man tasked with watching over the observance of democracy and free voting, single-handedly increased his salary, offering himself other privileges too. This is inadmissible. Toni Grebla should have been sacked immediately, because an institution like AEP – the most important in an election year – should not be tarnished by any scandal, let alone by its president. We saw what they did in the local and European parliamentary elections. Toni Grebla, the man who was supposed to intervene to stop the extensive vote rigging in Bucharest sectors 1 and 2, did nothing, quite on the contrary, he protected the Liberal and Social Democrat candidates,” says Mosteanu.
