Greenpeace Romania asks Bucharest Court to „immediately” suspend environmental agreement for Neptun Deep

Published on

Greenpeace Romania activists request the Bucharest Court to „immediately suspend” the environmental agreement for the Neptun Deep project and claim that the Constanta Environmental Protection Agency issued the environmental agreement in serious violation of the legal provisions and associated procedures.

„While OMV Petrom and Romgaz claim that the carbon footprint of the Neptun Deep project is zero, that these emissions do not exist, we will certainly feel their impact. Even in the last weeks, Romania has faced consecutive heat waves, severe drought and quantitatively significant precipitation. This project will only fuel the climate crisis we are facing, threaten marine biodiversity and endanger public health. We will continue the series of public awareness events, protests and actions in court and we will hold accountable all the authorities and companies that tried to destroy the Black Sea,” said Alin Tanase, Greenpeace Romania campaign coordinator, in a press release sent to AGERPRES on Monday.

In the view of Greenpeace Romania, the Neptun Deep project raises serious concerns related to environmental protection, climate change and compliance with legislation.

Until now, Greenpeace Romania has sued the OMV Petrom and Romgaz companies, the Tuzla City Hall and Local Council, the Dobrogea Water Basin Administration – Littoral and the Grigore Antipa National Research – Marine Development Institute for irregularities in the approval processes and lack of transparency in connection with crucial data regarding the toxic substances that will be discharged into the Black Sea.

The organization also launched a petition to protect the Black Sea and stop the Neptun Deep project, which collected over 37,000 signatures.
