Prime minister Marcel Ciolacu said that if a drone enters Romania’s territory, it is identified and it is sent to hit a target on Romania’s soil, it will be downed at once.
The prime minister was asked on Wednesday if Romania has the necessary legislation to down drones entering national territory.
„It is an entire discussion. If you down drones on Romania’s territory, but they are from Ukraine’s territory. If those drones hit targets on the territory of… It is a discussion, let us take it much more seriously. What I can tell you for certain: if a drone enters Romania’s territory, it is identified and it is sent to hit a target on Romania’s soil, it will be downed at once. (…) And the last time it has happened,” Marcel Ciolacu said.
He was also asked about the situation of the past few days when a drone entered several tens of kilometers on Romanian territory.
„And we have raised F-16s and we have monitored the entire trajectory on Romanian territory, as have other countries. You know we have international air police. Don’t worry that that drone could have hit a target on Romanian territory. It would have been shot down immediately, according to protocol, law or no law. Nobody is playing games,” concluded Ciolacu.
The Senate Defence Committee will meet on Wednesday with representatives of the National Defence Ministry.
According to Parliament sources, one of the topics of the meeting is the assessment of amending legislation so as to allow the military to down drones entering Romania’s territory.
