Visually impaired protesting in Victoriei Square

Published on

The Association of Persons with Visual Impairment in Romania is organising a protest rally on Thursday, between 10,00-14,00hrs, in Victoriei Square, with the main dissatisfaction being related to the decrease in pensions.

„This is just a continuation of our protest. The visually impaired are members of the Federation of the National Council for Disability in Romania. We are taking the same steps until these human rights violations are resolved,” president of the National Council for Disability in Romania Daniela Tontsch told AGERPRES, adding that no one from the government came to discuss their proposals and that the social aid offered keeps the disabled isolated from society.

According to representatives of the Council, Law no. 360/2023 on the public pension system, which came into force on September 1, brings „major damage” to people with visual disabilities.

According to the quoted source, all disabled people retired at the age limit are severely affected, regardless of the field in which they worked, which in the long term affects both their social status and „the right to a dignified life.”

If a law is not be adopted urgently to „establish real equity” in the public pension system, people with severe visual impairment will be condemned to poverty and social exclusion.
