Mircea Geoana, an independent candidate in the upcoming presidential elections, stated that the decision of the Constitutional Court of Romania (CCR) to „eliminate” a candidate from the race for the presidential office has anti-democratic effects.
„I made it a principle not to comment on judicial decisions. Not even in 2009 [when I also was a presidential candidate – editor’s note], when the CCR refused to proceed with the recount of the votes, although there were abundant and proven indications that we were facing a certain fraud [I did not comment – editor’s note], and I will not do it today. However, if yesterday’s decision of the Court to eliminate a candidate for the presidential office may have constitutional coverage, it certainly has anti-democratic effects, and is not something that is good for us or healthy for our democracy. Only an independent president can guarantee the independence of the judiciary,” said Geoana, at the launch of his political offer „My Commitment to Romania: the Real Change for a Decade of National Rebirth,” which took place at an events center in the Capital City.
He argued that „if there are influential political leaders who think that, by taking advantage of such situations, they can decide who will eventually go to the second round of the presidential election, they are very mistaken.”
„And, in a way, besides the political, moral, economic, socio-economic obligation to run for and win the presidency, I now also feel that I have the democratic obligation to win the elections for the president of Romania,” said Mircea Geoana .
The Constitutional Court of Romania admitted, on Saturday, with a majority of votes, the appeals filed by two people and annulled the Decision of the Central Electoral Bureau no. 18/D of October 3, 2024 regarding the registration of the candidacy and electoral sign of Diana Iovanovici-SoSoaca in the presidential election.
