Guarantee-Return Scheme is successful project unlike waste management system disaster (Environment minister)

The Guarantee-Return System (SGR) is the largest Public-Private Partnership in Romania and the largest circularity project in our country since the ’89 Revolution, Minister of Environment, Water and Forests Mircea Fechet told the conference „PRIA Environment – One Year Anniversary of SGR in Romania” on Tuesday.

The minister expressed his pride at the success of the SGR project, having registered figures that no one dreamed of, compared to the conventional system of waste management, sanitation, where „we all know the disaster of that system”.

„Looking at the RetuRO company reports on the performance of the guarantee-return system, in September, the last month assessed, 81% is an absolutely spectacular figure. It is much more than what we imagined a year ago that it could be done 10 or 20 years ago, when few believed that if it can be done in Germany or in other western countries advanced from this point of view, it can be done in Romania, too,” said the Environment minister.

He mentioned that Romanians have understood, out of civic spirit, that recyclable materials eventually end up in a recycling plant and that this is the success of the SGR circular economy system.

According to RetuRO, the administrator of the Return Guarantee System, more than 81% of packaging with the „SGR” logo was returned by consumers in September, up from 78% in August. Consumers returned 453 million packages last month.

The PRIA Environment conference was attended by representatives of the company RetuRO, manufacturers, retailers, associations in the field, environmental companies in the areas of recycling, sanitation, OIREP, UATs, ADIs, and central authorities.
