Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs: No territorial acquisition based on the violation of international law can be recognized

Published on

Romania reminds that „no territorial acquisition” based on the violation of international law can be recognized and reaffirms its „firm” support for the sovereignty of Ukraine, as well as for the territorial integrity of this state within its internationally recognized borders, shows a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) sent to AGERPRES on Friday.

According to the MAE, „Romania condemns in the strongest terms the signing of the so-called ‘accession agreements to the Russian Federation’ of some Ukrainian regions under the illegal occupation of Russian troops, as a result of the war of aggression launched by Russia against Ukraine”.

„These illegal and illegitimate ‘agreements’ are part of the Kremlin’s series of attempts to justify its illegal military occupation of territories belonging to another sovereign state and represent an irresponsible escalation of the current situation,” points out the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The MAE statement reads that „these actions cannot produce any kind of effect from the point of view of international law, and Romania does not recognize their validity, especially regarding the operation of any change regarding the territorial belonging of the Ukrainian regions targeted at Ukraine”.

„As in the case of the illegal annexation of Crimea and Sevastopol, the actions of the Russian Federation are based on the illegal use of force and represent serious violations of the most important principles and norms of international law, enshrined, in particular, by the provisions of the UN Charter. The Russian Federation acts contrary to all the responsibilities it should fulfill, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, which is the guarantor of international peace and security,” MAE also said.
