Romania’s negative natural growth extends into December 2024

The natural population change in Romania stayed negative in December 2024, at minus 9,617, with the number of deaths being 1.8 times higher than that of live births, according to data published on Monday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

In December 2024, 11,937 births were registered, up 2.1% from November 2024 and 12.5% from December 2023.

The number of deaths recorded in December 2024 was 21,554 (11,325 men and 10,229 women), up 9.1% for men and 6% for women from November 2024.

The number of deaths of children under the age of one recorded in December 2024 was 85, up 27 from November 2024. .

In December 2024, 41.3% (8,892 deaths) of the total number of deaths was in people aged 80 and over, 26% (5,607 deaths) in people aged 70-79 and 17.6%, or 3,796 deaths, in people aged 60-69. On the other hand, the fewest deaths were recorded in the age class 0-4 years (95 deaths), 5-19 years (43 deaths) and 20-29 years (96 deaths).

In December 2024, 2,167 marriages were recorded. The number of final divorces was 1,734.
