PM Ciolacu says Iohannis’s resignation caught him unaware

Published on

Social-Democrat leader, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said on Monday that he was unaware of Klaus Iohannis’s decision to resign office as President of Romania. Asked if Iohannis consulted with coalition leaders on the matter, Ciolacu said that „it’s a unilateral act. (…) I was not aware of this announcement.”

Also, asked by journalists if the head of state was a burden for the coalition’s presidential candidate, Marcel Ciolacu replied: „I am not a big fan of President Klaus Iohannis, I never voted for him.” He explained that Iohannis appointed him as head of the Executive because the Constitution required him to.

„He appointed me because he was obliged by the Constitution, because there was a majority. Even as the President of Romania, you don’t make appointments as you please,” Ciolacu specified.

He also assured that Crin Antonescu definitely remains the coalition’s presidential candidate. Asked about the possibility that Ilie Bolojan might like to stay longer in the presidential seat after he takes over as acting president, Ciolacu replied: „I am telling you that Crin Antonescu is the coalition’s candidate and will stay so.”
