Research Minister Burduja: Romanians- some of the best people in AI and machine learning areas

Romania has an exceptional mathematics school and some of the best people in the world in the artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning areas are Romanians, Minister of Research, Innovation and Digitisation Sebastian Burduja stated, according to Agerpres.

„Artificial intelligence is, in fact, advanced mathematics. Romania has an exceptional mathematics school and, in fact, some of the best people in the world in the AI and machine learning areas are Romanians. That is the reality. If we strictly take the human resources we would have at our disposal, we should be in the avant-garde. What we still need is new applications of these technologies and technology transfer in order to develop essential artificial intelligence solutions which would contribute to tackling some of the world’s greatest challenges. (…) I congratulate the University Politehnica of Bucharest for the extraordinary research work in the area of Artificial Intelligence and I want to make it clear that it is not Romania’s only place of excellence in this area and I also want to mention the centers in Cluj, Timisoara or Iasi,” Minister Burduja said at the conference called „Building a Global Ethical Framework for AI: The UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of AI” which was held at the University Politehnica of Bucharest.

The Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digitisation (MCID) and UNESCO, in partnership with the University Politehnica of Bucharest (UPB), the Western University of Timisoara (UVT) and the Romanian Parliament, organized today the conference called: „Building a Global Ethical Framework for AI: The UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of AI.”

The event brought together a wide range of specialists, academics, researchers and representatives of civil society to discuss the UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of AI, the first global tool of its kind which identifies ethical risks related to artificial intelligence and its ability to serve as a global tool for the design, development and implementation of AI ethics.
