Parlaiment’s judiciary committees to take up request to dismiss election official Grebla

The judiciary committees of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate will meet on Friday morning to draw up a report on the dismissal of chairman of the Standing Electoral Authority (AEP) Toni Grebla, a report that will be put up for a vote at a joint plenary session.

Chairman of the Judiciary Committee of the Chamber of Deputies Bogdan Ciuca told AGERPRES that Grebla was also invited to the meeting.

„Mr Grebla is invited to the joint meeting of the two committees because it is his right to express his point of view. The report will enter the joint plenary session on Friday,” Ciuca said.

Grebla is expected to be dismissed from office on Friday.

At a joint sitting on Tuesday, Parliament’s standing bureaus decided that the request for Grebla’s dismissal from office should be sent to the judiciary committees of the two legislative chambers for the drafting of a decision and a report, so that it will be on the agenda of the joint plenary session on Friday.

Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Ciprian Erban on Tuesday sent to the standing bureaus the proposal to remove Toni Grebla from the position of AEP chaiman.

„Mr Toni Grebla, in March 2023, two days after being appointed to this position, established his monthly allowance in violation of the law, in relation to the level of the minimum gross pay at the date of appointment (RON 3,000 ), although the allowances were frozen at the level of RON 2,080, the value of the amounts unduly collected for the years 2023 – 2024 being ascertained and established by an audit ofRomania’s Court of Auditors,” reads the request.

According to the document, the erroneous calculation of the monthly allowance had an impact, implicitly, on the amount of the daily travel allowance that was determined as a percentage of the monthly allowance.

„In 2024, although there is a headquarters contract concluded for the operation of the Central Electoral Bureau, located in Eugeniu Carada Street no. 1-3, Mr Toni Grebla, the chairman of the Standing Electoral Authority, relocated the headquarters of the Central Electoral Bureau to another address by concluding a new contract, additionally stressing out the budget of the Standing Electoral Authority and implicitly the national budget. Mr Toni Grebla has proved, through public statements and actions lately, a conduct incompatible with the position he holds, damaging the image and prestige of the Standing Electoral Authority,” according to the request.
