Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, the national leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), said on Thursday that he believes that the Save Romania Union (USR) should join the coalition government alongside the Social Democratic Party (PSD), the National Liberal Party (PNL), the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) and national minorities and support the coalition’s candidate for the presidential election, Crin Antonescu.
„I am very glad that they decided to table the motion of censure after swearing at each other about who votes for it, who does not vote for it, who signs it, who does not sign it, because this chapter is also closed. Tomorrow there is a motion of censure for Ciolacu to be cursed at, because it has no chance of passing. It doesn’t even have a single chance to pass. I also saw the announcement of the USR lawmakers that they will not vote for this bill, for a reason – that we bring instability to Romania. They can vote, I invite them to vote, because the motion will not pass anyway, even if they vote too. However, I must note that it is a gesture of normality, from my point of view, and I would really like to see you in the show, and I will allow myself to bother Mrs President Lasconi, I consider, as I considered when the government was formed, that USR should also join in the government, together with PSD,PNL, UDMR and the national minorities,” Ciolacu told Romania TV private broadcaster.
He added that USR could join the government on condition that it discards its own presidential candidate and instead supports the coalition’s candidate, Crin Antonescu.
„I consider that it is a difficult moment, not only nationally, a difficult moment within the EU and it is a difficult moment globally and at this moment we have to overcome all the egos, all the things that divide us and see what the Romanians sent us to Parliament for, what the Romanians pay us for in the temporary positions we occupy and I think it would be an act of unity and I would like all the forces including USR, to have a single candidate in these elections. (…) That means, I suppose yes [to USR discarding its own presidential candidate], especially since a coalition that already has 50%, because otherwise the government would not pass in Parliament, we already have an agreement and we have designated a single candidate, Mr Crin Antonescu.”
