PresidentialElection2025/Diana Sosoaca to throw in her bid, says two-time ban for the same reasons impossible

Published on

Leader of the S.O.S. Romania Party Diana Sosoaca announced that she will throw in her bid for president on Thursday, arguing that the Central Electoral Bureau and the Constitutional Court cannot reject her candidacy for the same reasons as in October 2024.

„Regarding Mr. Georgescu’s being barred from running, you know how it goes, I am going back on the path that takes him to the exit. (…) As much as I criticize Mr. Georgescu, as long as there is no final ruling to convict him and ban him from running, he shouldn’t be stopped,” Sosoaca declared at the Palace of Parliament, specifying that she will submit her candidacy file on Thursday.

„I assume that you will have this question whether they will ban me tomorrow. From a legal point of view, after examining the entire situation with our lawyers, they are no longer allowed to ban me, because you cannot ban the same candidate twice for the same reasons, you cannot be tried twice for the same act. Mind you! So the Constitutional Court and the Central Electoral Bureau no longer have the right to cancel my candidacy on the grounds of Decision No. 2 of October 5, 2024. It is a principle of law that operates internationally, you cannot be tried and convicted twice for the same act,” explained the S.O.S. Romania leader.

Sosoaca also said that if her candidacy is rejected, she will take „all legal actions”, but in no case will she resort to a parliamentary protest.

„We have so many exceptional lawyers here. We will appeal, just as we appealed the other decision, we will take international political and legislative action, we will obviously notify all international forums that are competent on the matter and are required to intervene,” she said.
