PresidentialElection2025/PNL’s Sighiartau: After election, a new political beginning; Bolojan – best prime minister option

Published on

National Liberal Party (PNL) Vice President Robert Sighiartau on Wednesday said that after the presidential elections, there will be „a new political beginning,” mentioning that Ilie Bolojan is the best option for prime minister.

Sighiartau underscored at Parliament that there has never been any discussion within the party or the coalition regarding Ilie Bolojan running in the presidential elections, adding that he has more a prime minister profile.

About the existence of some leaders in the PNL having asked Bolojan to run in the presidential election, Robert Sighiartau said those were speculations doing nothing but overshadowing what was going on with the presidential election at the moment.

„We have the candidates lined up, the battle is clear. Victor Ponta, in my point of view, is the our main opponent, as he represents the fauly past of everything that means PSD socialism and false sovereigntism. Mr Simion as well, I would place them in the same package. But I am mainly focused on Victor Ponta,” he explained.

Asked if the Social Democratic Party (PSD) was going to break the ruling coalition if Bolojan ran for president or if it was a mistake for PNL not to place a bet on Bolojan, he said he did not have any pieces of information in this respect.

He also said that he wished Ilie Bolojan were prime minister after the presidential election.

According to Sighiartau, there no demobilisation regarding Crin Antonescu’s candidacy, but a shift in approach and communication, particulary after the voided election last year.

He denied the idea that PNL mayors would not campaign for Crin Antonescu locally, adding he did not know of any PSD mayors supporting Victor Ponta from the shadow.

About Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) leader Kelemen Hunor’s statement, according to whom, if Antonescu losses the election, the coalition can no longer stand, Sighiartau said he did not believe in predictions.

„It is too soon to talk now alliances or configurations. In my point of view, the coalition at the moment must focus on reducing deficit, reducing state spending and, unfortunately, after Mr Bolojan leaves Cotroceni, I haven’t seen this discussion mentioned, which is compulsory exactly to reset Romania in terms of finance,” Robert Sighiartau also said.
