Romania’s crude oil production down 4.5% in January 2025; imports, up 15.6%

Romania produced 219,000 tonnes of crude oil equivalent (toe) in January 2025, 12,700 toe lower (-4.5%) compared to the same period of the previous year, according to data compiled by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

Crude oil imports in the first month of 2025 totaled 840,700 toe, 113,500 toe higher than those recorded in January 2024 (+15.6%).

According to the latest Energy Balance Prognosis published by the National Commission for Strategy and Prognosis (CNSP), crude oil production is expected to decrease at an average annual rate of 2.5% until 2027.

Thus, for 2025, an estimated 2.74 million toe is projected (2.8% decrease compared to the previous year), 2.68 million toe in 2026 (2.2% decrease), and 2.63 million toe in 2027 (1.9% decrease).

According to CNSP, this decline is the result of the natural depletion of reserves and the maintenance of existing production units.

Crude oil imports are expected to rise to 7.8 million toe by 2027, with an average annual growth rate of 1.5%. After an estimated 13.7% decrease in 2024, to 6.34 million toe, imports are forecast to increase by 10.4% in 2025, to 7 million toe, by 7.4% in 2026, to 7.52 million toe, and by 7.8% in 2027.
