USR demands PM Ciolacu clarify statements by special envoy to US

Published on

The Save Romania Union (USR) demands that Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu „urgently” clarify the statements of his special envoy to the United States.

„Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu has the obligation to publicly clarify what mandate he gave to Mr. Dragos Sprinceana, whom he appointed as special envoy for relations with the United States, and whether he discussed this diplomatic mission with interim President Ilie Bolojan or if he preferred to carry it out unilaterally,” reads a press release the Save Romania Union (USR) sent on Monday.

According to the quoted source, Marcel Ciolacu „must clarify publicly” whether the Social Democratic Party (PSD), the party he leads, and the candidate he supports, Crin Antonescu, share the vision expressed by Dragos Sprinceana – „misalignment with the European vision” regarding support for Ukraine, the „false necessity to choose” between the EU and the USA, as well as the „legitimacy of the interim president, who does not express the official position” of Romania.

„In this complicated context, Mr. Sprinceana’s statements cannot be categorised as personal eccentricities. This is about Romania’s credibility internationally, as well as the positioning of our country on some of the most complex issues of the moment. USR has been, is, and will remain a firm defender of democratic and pro-European values and reminds Mr. Ciolacu that Romania is a reliable partner of the United States and a country that has made a profound commitment to the values and objectives of the European Union. Any attempt to undermine this commitment must be firmly rejected,” said USR Chair Elena Lasconi.

USR stresses that Romania „cannot afford ambiguities” in foreign policy and it is „vital” for Prime Minister Ciolacu to communicate whether Dragos Sprinceana made false statements regarding the mandate he received or whether this is „a possible deviation” from the strategic direction of the Romanian state.

„USR brings to mind that, at the highest level of the Romanian state, there has been a constant hesitation in the public discourse regarding the assistance provided to Ukraine in the last three years, which led to a massive increase in conspiracy theories and a wave of fake news and manipulation online. Neither former President Klaus Iohannis nor Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu clearly and repeatedly explained to citizens what Romania’s assistance to Ukraine entails, what its purpose is, and now we all see the effects of this lack of communication. USR categorically reaffirms that Romania must continue its European path and defend democratic values,” the quoted source concludes.
