Finance Minister Tanczos Barna met on Monday with representatives of the Romanian Automobile Makers Association (ACAROM) and the Concordia Employers’ Confederation for consultations in the context of the new customs duties imposed by the U.S.

„We are preparing the first measures to protect the Romanian automotive industry, in the context of the new customs duties imposed by the U.S. Today we started the consultation process with representatives of the Romanian Automobile Makers Association (ACAROM) and the Concordia Employers’ Confederation. Romanian companies supply essential components for the European automotive industry and thus contribute, indirectly, to car exports from the European Union to the United States. In this context, it is essential to carefully monitor market developments and the new perspectives generated by the current changes”, the Finance Minister wrote on his Facebook account.

Following the meeting, it was agreed that, together with industry representatives, an integrated analysis of the impact of these customs duties on the automotive sector be carried out, in order to develop effective support schemes.

„Our priority remains protecting the competitiveness of Romanian companies and jobs in the automotive industry,” Tanczos Barna stressed.

In accordance with the large-scale tariffs announced by the Washington Administration, imports of steel, aluminum and cars from the 27 EU member states will be subject to 25% customs duties.
