Kelemen Hunor about Sprinceana: He does not have the necessary preparation to talk about politics

Published on

Romania needs its diaspora, but Dragos Sprinceana „does not have the necessary preparation to talk about politics beyond a table, in a restaurant or a pub,” Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) Chairman Kelemen Hunor said on Tuesday.

„This gentleman does not have the necessary preparation to talk about politics beyond a table, in a restaurant or a pub,” Kelemen Hunor told RFI.

According to the UDMR leader, Sprinceana’s opinions are those of a „character” who is not an envoy.

„It’s a personal opinion of a gentleman, a character, whom I do not know and cannot categorise otherwise than as a personal opinion. Nothing more. So he is not a messenger, not a commissioner, not an envoy; there is no paper anywhere that makes this gentleman a special envoy. It is his point of view, a private point of view. (…) And things were clarified yesterday by Prime Minister Ciolacu. I suspect he had a conversation with the interim president as well. (…) Still, I expect, at least as far as I am concerned, to see things in a much more correct light than someone who has no connection with the political world. I have the impression that he doesn’t even understand politics,” Kelemen Hunor said.

The UDMR leader also said that „there is no mandate” for Dragos Sprinceana: „There is no such thing, these are just words, but where’s the paper, what’s the mandate?.”

„We constantly need the Romanian diaspora from the US and beyond. There is, at this moment, without a doubt, a lack of communication, but it’s not just Romania in this situation, more than half the planet has a communication problem with the Trump administration. But from here to appointing someone who should be… there is no such thing!,” he added.

When asked if this represents a mistake by the prime minister, the UDMR leader pointed out that, most likely, the prime minister was looking for someone with direct links to the new administration in the US.

„Probably the prime minister was looking for someone who has direct personal links there, but from here to saying that he is an envoy and that he has a mandate from Romania is too much to say. The person is not prepared for that, to engage in political discussions, and I really don’t care what point of view he has about Macron or a bunch of other things,” Kelemen Hunor added.

Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu stated that in the relationship with the United States, a „new approach” is being tried, specifying that to present Romania’s situation to the new Trump administration, Romanians from the diaspora involved in American politics, particularly in the Republican Party, were approached, one of whom is businessman Dragos Sprinceana.
