Gov’t debt slightly up in January, to 964.382 billion lei

The public administration debt (government debt) slightly increased in January 2025, reaching 964.382 billion lei, up from 964.345 billion lei in the previous month, according to data published by the Ministry of Finance (MF) and reviewed by AGERPRES.

As a percentage of GDP, government debt remained at 54.6% (GDP according to the National Institute of Statistics communication from March 7, 2025).

In January 2025, medium- and long-term debt rose to 889.16 billion lei, up from 884.175 billion lei in December 2024, while short-term debt decreased to 75.22 billion lei, down from 80.17 billion lei in the previous month.

The largest portion of this debt, 789.03 billion lei, was represented by government bonds. Loans amounted to 156.3 billion lei.

Debt in the national currency stood at 467.6 billion lei, debt in euros was 395.6 billion lei (equivalent), and debt in U.S. dollars was 99.03 billion (equivalent in lei).

According to the Ministry of Finance data, in January, the central public administration debt decreased to 939.97 billion lei, from 940.04 billion lei in December 2024, of which 864.8 billion lei was medium- and long-term debt. The majority of the central administration debt was contracted in lei (448.43 billion lei) and in euros (390.37 billion lei equivalent).

On the other hand, local public administration debt increased to 24.4 billion lei, up from 24.3 billion lei in the previous month, of which 24.36 billion lei was medium- and long-term debt.

Additionally, in the first month of this year, internal public administration debt amounted to 487.36 billion lei (485.95 billion lei in December 2024), or 27.6% of GDP (27.5% of GDP in the previous month), of which 468.26 billion lei was central administration debt and 19.11 billion lei was local administration debt.

According to the same source, the external debt of public administration amounted to 477.014 billion lei (478.396 billion lei in the previous month), or 27% of GDP (27.1% of GDP in December 2024), of which 471.71 billion lei was external debt of the central public administration and 5.297 billion lei was external debt of local public administration.
