American Chamber of Commerce calls for responsibility and dialogue in Romania’s economic recovery

Published on

The American Chamber of Commerce in Romania – AmCham Romania calls for responsibility and dialogue to prevent the irreversible depreciation of investor confidence in Romania, in the context of the economic turbulence accumulated and accentuated to the point of breakdown by the extended electoral period.

„On behalf of the 600 members, American, international and Romanian companies active in 32 economic sectors, with a contribution of 20% to Romania’s GDP, we reaffirm the priorities that the American Chamber of Commerce in Romania – AmCham Romania has consistently supported in consultations with decision-makers, as well as in the dialogue with candidates in the presidential elections,” reads a press release of the AmCham Romania sent to AGERPRES on Friday.

According to the same source, Romania’s zero priority is economic recovery and macro-budgetary balancing. „The elections are over, but the economy must remain afloat. Romania has been facing overlapping crises for several years, which have generated huge budgetary pressures, a considerably deteriorated investment climate, and the prospect of being downgraded to the category of countries not recommended for investment (junk) is closer than ever,” believe the representatives of the American Chamber of Commerce in Romania.

Business people argue that real reforms can no longer be postponed, that Romania cannot afford to lose European funds, and that financing the economy and exiting the crisis depend on the capacity to attract and use PNRR funds.

„To avoid a deeper destabilization of the economy, we understand that a fiscal reconfiguration is coming, which must be distributed fairly. The private sector has acutely felt these shocks, has absorbed them, but it can no longer be the only one paying this bill. In 2025, the private sector and society expect Romania, through its decisions and leaders, to prove that it is a mature member of the European Union, a trusted ally within NATO, a credible partner in the strategic relationship with the United States, a pillar of stability in the region, a serious candidate for OECD membership. These directions are not negotiable,” AmCham says.

In the context of the ongoing electoral debates, in line with the apolitical approach assumed over the past 32 years, AmCham Romania states that it remains an equidistant voice of the business community and does not make recommendations related to voting options.

„Regardless of the future configuration of the political power, we believe it is essential that political leaders engage, without delay, in a genuine dialogue with the private sector to stabilize and improve the economy,” it says in conclusion.

The American Chamber of Commerce in Romania – AmCham Romania is the most representative business association, recognized for facilitating a consistent public-private dialogue on the economic agenda and for contributing to strengthening economic relations between Romania and the United States.

With over 30 years of presence in Romania, AmCham currently brings together 600 American, international and Romanian companies with cumulative investments of over 30 billion US dollars in Romania.

AmCham Romania is an accredited member of the US Chamber of Commerce and is part of the European network of American Chambers of Commerce.
