Annual inflation rate stagnates at 4.9pct in April

Annual inflation rate stagnated in April at 4.9pct, with the most significant increases in prices being having been recorded in the services sector, which posted a price rise of 6.83pct, according to data published by the National Institute of Statistics (INS) on Tuesday.

Compared to April 2024, food prices climbed up to 5.57pct, and prices for non-food stuffs increased by 3.53pct.

„The consumer price index accounted for 100.07pct in April 2025 compared to March 2025. The inflation rate since the beginning of the year (April 2025 compared to December 2024) stood at 2.2pct. The annual inflation rate in April 2025 compared to April 2024 was 4.9pct. The average rate of change in consumer prices in the last 12 months (May 2024 – April 2025) compared to the previous 12 months (May 2023 – April 2024) was 5.0pct,” the INS press release states.

The Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP), an indicator for determining inflation in the EU Member States, was 100.21pct in April 2025 compared to the previous month and the annual inflation rate was 4.9pct in April 2025 compared to April 2024, calculated on the basis of the Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices.

The average rate of change in consumer prices in the last 12 months (May 2024 – April 2025) was 5.3pct compared to the previous 12 months (May 2023 – April 2024) determined on the basis of the HICP, the same source states.

In March, the annual inflation rate fell to 4.86pct, from 5.02pct in February, as food prices rose by 5.10pct, non-food prices by 3.84pct, and services by 6.99pct.

The National Bank of Romania (BNR) has revised upwards, to 3.8pct, from 3.5pct previously, the inflation forecast for the end of 2025 and anticipates that it will reach 3.1pct by the end of 2026, according to data presented in February by the governor of the BNR, Mugur Isarescu.
