Industrial output down 4.2pct in Q1

Industrial output decreased in the first quarter of this year, compared to the same period in 2024, both as a gross series, by 4.2%, and as series adjusted depending on the number of business days and seasonality, by 3.1%, according to data released by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

Thus, between January 1 and March 31, 2025, the drop in industrial production (gross series) was caused by decreases in the manufacturing industry (-4.7%), production and supply of electricity and heat, gas, hot water and air conditioning (-1.9%) and the extractive industry (-1.5%).

By series adjusted depending on the number of business days and seasonality, the evolution of industrial production was generated by decreases in the three industrial sectors: manufacturing (-3.7%), extractive industry (-1.2%) and production and supply of electricity and heat, gas, hot water and air conditioning (-0.9%).

In March 2025, industrial production (gross series) increased by 8.8% compared to the previous month, due to increases in the extractive industry (+17.1%) and manufacturing industry (+10.2%). Production and supply of electricity and heat, gas, hot water and air conditioning decreased by 3.3%.

Industrial production, as series adjusted depending on the number of business days and seasonality, was lower than the previous month by 0.5%, due to decreases in the production and supply of electricity and heat, gas, hot water and air conditioning (-3.5%) and in the manufacturing industry (-0.6%). The extractive industry increased by 5.4%.

Compared to the corresponding month of the previous year, industrial production (gross series) decreased by 4.8%, due to the decline in the manufacturing industry (-5.5%) and the production and supply of electricity and heat, gas, hot water and air conditioning (-2.4%). The extractive industry increased by 1%.

Industrial production, as series adjusted depending on the number of business days and seasonality, was lower than the corresponding month of the previous year by 7.6%, as a result of the decreases recorded in the manufacturing industry (-9.3%) and the production and supply of electricity and heat, gas, hot water and air conditioning (-1.9%). The extractive industry grew by 0.8%.
