President-elect Nicusor Dan on Saturday said that Romania is making progress in its relations with the United States and expressed confidence that trust will be restored.
„The issue with Harvard is a matter of American domestic politics, and Romania, no matter how much it would like things to go one way or another, cannot intervene. Regarding the Visa Waiver, there will be a discussion as soon as we establish fair, trust-based relations with the American administration – something we are working on and for which I am extremely optimistic. Similarly, regarding American troops in Romania and Europe, we have a strategic partnership with the United States, and I very much want this partnership to continue to be strengthened,’ said Nicusor Dan, when asked about issues in the relationship with the United States regarding the Visa Waiver, Harvard, and the potential withdrawal of American troops from Europe, and what he will do to maintain good relations with the U.S.
When asked how he would evaluate relations with the United States, Nicusor Dan said: ‘It’s only been six days.’
‘We have had some contacts, of course. We have met, including with the number two official at the embassy, because as you know, we currently don’t have an ambassador. It is very good that the American president has nominated an ambassador, who will probably arrive in four to five months from now. We’re making progress. I am confident that we will restore trust,’ added the president-elect.
