Wholesale trade down 2.7pct as gross series in Q1

Wholesale trade (except for motor vehicles and motorcycle trade) lost 2.7%, as gross series, in the first three months of the current year, compared to the same period in 2024, according to data published on Monday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

According to the same source, between January 1 and March 31, 2025, decreases were recorded in the wholesale trade of raw agricultural products and live animals (-30.1%) and specialized wholesale trade of other products (-7.6%).

On the other hand, increases were recorded in wholesale trade of computer and telecommunications equipment (+8.2%), wholesale trade of consumer goods, other than food (+7.2%), non-specialized wholesale trade (+6.5%), wholesale trade of other machinery, equipment and supplies (+2.5%), wholesale trade of food, beverages and tobacco (+0.9%) and intermediation activities in wholesale trade (+0.7%).

As series adjusted depending on the number of business days and seasonality, wholesale trade (except for motor vehicles and motorcycles) business decreased by 4.4% in the first quarter of this year, compared to the same period in 2024.

INS data show that in March this year, compared to the same month in 2024, the turnover in wholesale trade (except for motor vehicles and motorcycles), as gross series, increased overall by 0.3%, due to non-specialized wholesale trade (+10.3%), wholesale of consumer goods, other than food (+9.8%), wholesale of other machinery, equipment and supplies (+7.9%), wholesale of food, beverages and tobacco (+3.4%), wholesale of computer and telecommunications equipment (+2.4%) and intermediation activities in trade in wholesale (+1.7%).

In contrast, decreases were recorded in: wholesale of raw agricultural products and live animals (-24.2%) and specialized wholesale of other products (-4%).

According to official statistics, from one year to another, in March 2025, wholesale trade business, as adjusted series, decreased by 4.6%.

At a comparative level March – February 2025, wholesale trade turnover (except for motor vehicles and motorcycles) increased, as a gross series, by 14.5%, while as an adjusted series it decreased by 0.9%.
