Prime minister may be appointed this week, President Dan says

President Nicusor Dan stated on Tuesday in Chisinau that a prime minister may be appointed this week, and the technical discussions on measures to reduce the budget deficit will continue on Wednesday.

„I said a few days ago that there was possibility to appoint the prime minister this week, a possibility that remains, but it is a possibility, not a promise,” explained the head of state, who is visiting Chisinau, in a joint press conference held with the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu.

According to him, technical discussions on measures to reduce the budget deficit are not at a standstill.

„The parties’ representatives had technical discussions in which they identified (…) about 60-80 possible measures to reduce the deficit that they listed, for some the budgetary impact was calculated. Yesterday there was a political discussion on this set of measures and on the others that are somehow much easier to agree on in the areas corresponding to the other ministries and, following yesterday’s discussion, it was considered correct for them to continue in a form in which the political representative, that is, the party leader, would be present, both technically and on the economic side so that the political side would understand better. It is not a deadlock, it is a technical discussion with obvious effects, which continues today and tomorrow”, mentioned Nicusor Dan.

He explained that this committee of parties, which will most likely form the government, has a hierarchy of priorities.

„First, it talks about cutting unnecessary state expenses, then it talks about merging institutions, then it talks about rescheduling some investments, so that their burden goes from 2025 to 2026 and, only finally, it talks about possible tax increases. You being incisive and the political side being permeable, the story with taxes reached public opinion faster than the other stages, but this is the order in which the work is being done and I hope that we will get to the tax part as little as possible. Regarding the 2025 budget and investments that are common with the Republic of Moldova, there is no question of rescheduling,” added Nicusor Dan.
