The parliamentary groups of Alliane for the Union of Romanians (AUR) and S.O.S. Romania in the Chamber of Deputies requested on Monday, at the Permanent Bureau, the establishment of an investigation commission into the causes of the ecological accident at the Praid Salt Mine and the identification of institutional responsibilities.
The leadership of the Chamber of Deputies has established that this request be included on the agenda of next week’s plenary session.
„In May 2025, in the mining area of the Praid Salt Mine, an exceptional and serious event occurred, consisting of massive water infiltration into the active galleries of the salt mine, affecting the exploitation infrastructure and the operation of the facility, including from a tourist and economic point of view. The Praid Salt Mine is an industrial facility of national interest, under the administration of the National Salt Company – Salrom, a company majority owned by the Romanian state. The salt mine is of strategic importance for the domestic salt market, for the security of supply with mineral raw materials, as well as for the economic development of the Harghita area,” the initiators explained in the explanatory statement.
AUR and S.O.S. Romania parliamentarians wants this commission to analyze the responsibility of central and local public authorities, the involvement of Salrom in the management of exploitation risks, the administrative and legal obstacles that have arisen in the implementation of technical solutions, as well as the impact of the activity of environmental NGOs in the decision-making process regarding hydrotechnical developments in the area.
According to the initiators of the initiative, the results of the investigation will form the basis for the formulation of legislative proposals to consolidate the regime of salt exploitation, improve the regulatory framework regarding the management of hydrological and mineral risks, and establish administrative or disciplinary liability where violations of the law are found.
