ANCOM announces high-level meetings and bilateral meetings of the Romanian delegation, on the sidelines of the International Telecommunication Union Council.

„Romania remains a strong and reliable partner of the International Telecommunication Union ITU/ITU, committed to promoting global connectivity and sustainable digital transformation. Exercising the Presidency of the ITU Council 2025 signifies the trust placed in Romania by ITU member states and an opportunity to facilitate dialogue between regions with diverse interests, ensuring efficiency, transparency, and international cooperation,” reiterated Valeriu Zgonea, President of ANCOM, who attended the meeting of the International Telecommunication Union Council held in Geneva from June 17 to 27, 2025.

The Romanian delegation, led by the ANCOM president, met with Diana Tomimura, deputy director of the ITU Radio Bureau, during which they emphasized the importance of the radio sector and the technical activities of the study groups, in which ANCOM experts are involved.

The two officials also exchanged views on the upcoming World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC), which will address issues with a major impact on both ITU member states and the private sector, at a time when the efficient use of radio spectrum and satellite communications are issues of utmost importance for every country and region in the world.

On a bilateral level, the ANCOM president met with Haytham Abdulrahman AlOhali, interim governor of the Communications, Space and Technology Commission of Saudi Arabia.

The two sides discussed opportunities for cooperation, focusing on areas such as satellite communications, the convergence of non-terrestrial and terrestrial networks, emergency communications, and broadband network mapping.

In the context of the Saudi counterparts’ interest in a series of European regulations in the field, the ANCOM president highlighted that Romania can act as a facilitator for understanding EU regulatory principles and identifying points of common interest in the technical and legal areas between the Gulf Cooperation Council and the European space.

The ANCOM president also highlighted the attractive investment opportunities that Romania offers in the telecommunications and IT fields, including through its highly skilled technical human resources.

Radu MIRUȚĂ, president of the Chamber of Deputies’ Committee on Information Technology and Communications, also participated in these meetings.
