Minister of Foreign Affairs Emil Hurezeanu announced that the competent European institutions will investigate the case of a Romanian employee of the European External Action Service who was allegedly assaulted last month in Vladivostok, the Russian Federation, where she was on official business.
Hurezeanu made the clarifications during a press conference held on Wednesday at the Victoria Palace of Government, when he was asked how he commented on the information in this regard published by the German media.
„We knew right from the start what this was about. We were informed about the incident. We know the identity of the diplomat. She is an employee of the European Union’s foreign diplomatic service. This happened at the end of May, the person has since left the Russian Federation and is now sound and well in Brussels, and the specialized services of the European Commission, of the European Union, including those competent to investigate and draw the due conclusions, will do their duty,” Hurezeanu declared.
He mentioned that the Romanian investigation services were also informed.
Asked if the information according to which those who assaulted the diplomat were FSB officers is confirmed, the Foreign minister replied that these aspects are under investigation.
„This is an assumption made by the ‘Der Spiegel’ reporter after an off-the-record discussion that turned into an on-the-record discussion with a representative of the European Union’s foreign diplomatic service. (…) This information is under investigation. Only the specialized institutions, the European Union’s foreign diplomatic service, whose employee the Romanian diplomat is, are competent to draw the conclusions in this case,” Hurezeanu said.
