Chairman of the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) Kelemen Hunor declared on Thursday that the Union’s statutory forums will make a decision on the formation’s participation in the future government on Friday.
„In the current formula, the UDMR would get the Development Ministry and the Ministry of Culture, two important ministries; if the coalition blueprint stays like this and if our colleagues in the Standing Council that is to convene tomorrow decide that we have no objections to the fiscal plan formula – then we will make the nominations for the two ministries. I cannot promise today that the decision will be a positive one, because that means that we won’t have any influence on government decisions. That’s why we requested these days our future partners to ponder, because in such a government formula, when we all take up the responsibility of governing, each one must feel somewhat comfortable. Of course, the weighty parties have both the advantage and the disadvantage of having the truly powerful ministries, the ones that issue approvals, but ultimately, it’s them the ones who caused the damage in 2024, so a large part of the responsibility must also lie with them. (…) We continue discussions,” Kelemen Hunor declared at the Cotroceni Palace after consultations with President Nicusor Dan.
The UDMR leader specified that the tax plan is not yet finalized and that new talks will follow after the consultations at the Cotroceni Palace.
„We can move forward when there is a nomination for prime minister,” Kelemen Hunor added.
He pointed out that the talks regarding the political agreement wrapped up very quickly, as it was all a „mathematical approach”.
„It is my understanding that there’s the National Liberal Party’s proposal in the person of Ilie Bolojan. We support his nomination and we will continue discussions when he invites us to sit down with him. And we will do all the diligences tomorrow evening to complete all the parliamentary and constitutional procedures by Monday and make a decision in our statutory forums,” Kelemen Hunor said.
President Nicusor Dan held consultations on Thursday with the parliamentary parties and formations for the prime minister nomination. The consultations ended with the delegation of the Parliamentary Group of National Minorities.
According to political sources, President Nicusor Dan will meet on Thursday with the leaders of pro-European parties.
