The United States is Romania’s most important ally and a vital strategic partner, President Nicusor Dan said on Wednesday at the Independence Day reception.
„This special relationship with the United States remains one of the main pillars of our foreign policy. The United States is Romania’s most important ally and a vital strategic partner. Romania and the United States have several areas of strengthened cooperation, and the core of our partnership remains our shared commitment to the security and prosperity of our Euro-Atlantic community. The presence of US troops in Romania, alongside allied troops, is visible proof of this commitment on the part of the United States, for which our country and all its citizens are deeply grateful,” said the head of state.
He argued for the need to strengthen defence.
„We have major joint projects underway, from strengthening air defence to producing drones and ammunition. These represent more than just equipment and systems; they are a tangible demonstration of our shared commitment to collective defence and regional stability. We are aware that national security must start with our own actions and contributions. As such, we will continue to develop national defence capabilities and strategic infrastructure to enable the deployment, transit, stationing and hosting of US and other Allied forces on national territory,” said Nicusor Dan.
He emphasised that Romania’s geostrategic position, at the Black Sea and in the immediate vicinity of the war in Ukraine, „makes us even more acutely aware of the need for investment in the security of our citizens.”
„In a world where strategic competition is intensifying, relationships developed and tested over time, partnerships based on trust and shared values, such as the Strategic Partnership between Romania and the United States, are more important than ever. Joint US-Romanian projects in the field of nuclear energy are a telling example of the effectiveness of this Partnership. I am confident that the development of Units 3 and 4 at Cernavoda [Nuclear Power Plant, editor’s note], as well as the Doicesti power plant, which will be the first in the world to implement a solution based on small modular reactor technology, will make a significant contribution to regional and European energy security,” further shows president Dan.
