Romanian swimmer David Popovici, the reigning Olympic champion, on Monday advanced to the semifinals of the men’s 200-metre freestyle event at the World Swimming Championships in Singapore as the best qualifier in his heat.
Popovici clocked in at 1:45.43, followed by American Luke Hobson, 1:45.61, and British Matthew Richards, 1:45.66.
He will compete in the second semifinal today. The final is scheduled for Tuesday.
Also on Monday, compatriot Denis Popescu competed in the men’s 100 m backstroke heats, finishing 33rd.
Popovici will also compete in the 100 m freestyle, 50 m freestyle, and Popescu in the 100 m butterfly and 50 m backstroke.
